About the piece
Northwestern University has celebrated the life and legacy of Dr. King since 1987 with an expanded commemoration. The celebration includes stage events, discussions, lectures, films, music, theater and service projects throughout the week leading up to MLK Jr. Day. The goal is to inspire reflection on Dr. King’s life and legacy.
As a member of the MLK Jr. planning committee, I had the honor of creating all marketing material for the University's event from 2013-2020. In years prior to 2018 stock images of Dr. King were the standard for all marketing material. In 2018, I decided to move away from a stock image and I created a painting that could be used moving forward. The painting below is now continuously used for Northwestern’s MLK Jr. commemoration and part of the standard branding for all print and digital marketing pieces.
